Word of the Month: Anorthosite
Anorthosite is an igneous rock consisting predominantly (>90%) of the mineral plagioclase feldspar. Massif anorthosites are uniquely associated with mezoproterozoic crustal terranes, many being emplaced during Grenville-related events. The source of many debates, it is still largely unknown and poorly understood as to how exactly these rocks come to exist. Nevertheless, it is a very interesting type of rock and occupies a significant portion of the Canadian Shield and Grenville terranes of the world.
