Credit Qualification:  Doctoral Program

72 units are required by the Graduate School for formal "ABD" status, along with completion of all Doctoral program requirements except for the dissertation and oral defense.  It is unclear whether the GS will include completion of the teaching requirement in the criteria for ABD status.

1.

WebSTAC should show a cumulative total of all units that qualify for the graduate program for all courses and independent study and research for which a final grade (not I or N) has been submitted by the faculty member.

2.

The following courses are NOT counted in the total

a.

Those with grades of I or N, until a grade change has been submitted and processed

b.

Those with course numbers of 399 or less, or of 883 or more.

c.

Those taken through U. College

d.

Those "in progress" - courses for the current semester, until the semester is over

e.

Courses taken at another college or university - unless credit has been transferred.

Such a transfer has not, in over 20 years, been necessary, and has only been done two or three times. (except for courses taken at SLU under the Inter-University Tuition Plan - which are transferred in for credit).

3.

The Graduate School usually provides full tuition support – but only up to the 36 unit (terminal Masters) or 72 unit requirement.  Tuition for any additional units must be requested from the Dean of the Graduate School.  If not granted, tuition for additional units must be paid, at full rate, by the student.
