LEVEE Mail to Windows Live Mail remote access

LEVEE is our ever popular e-mail server and it works great for most people on campus. However, off campus, people want to retrieve their LEVEE mail, so you can use our own webmail facility on LEVEE, or you can do what I tell most people, use a free GMail account to access your LEVEE mail. However, the university is going with Live@Edu for student e-mail instead, so here is a page dedicated to that wonderful online application.

Live@Edu provides a repository to store all your e-mail and is much more robust than using either LEVEE or the ArtSci system. Would you rather use our sad little five year old $5,000 Sun upstairs, ArtSci's aging $100,000 Sun system over at West Campus, or Microsoft's multi-million dollar datacenter for your e-mail?

Reading Your E-Mail remotely using a Live@Edu Account

The first thing many people want to do is read their e-mail remotely. To do this from Live.com, you must first set it up to grab a copy of your LEVEE mail.
  1. Sign up for a free Windows Live Mail (Hotmail) account and login. Soon the university will provide a Live@Edu address for you.

  2. First make sure you are in the Mail application by clicking on the word Mail along the top of the page. Your folders should be listed along the left side of the page.

  3. Click on the link on the left that says Add an e-mail account

  4. First click on the Advanced Options link and enter the following:
    • For e-mail address enter username@levee.wustl.edu and for password enter your levee password
    • For POP3 user name enter username, your LEVEE username
    • Enter your LEVEE password in the Password field
    • The Incoming Mail Server is levee.wustl.edu
    • Select the Port to be 110
    • Uncheck the box that says "This server requires a secure connection"
    • You can leave a copy of your messages on LEVEE if you like for safe keeping. Note that large attachments are periodically deleted!
    • Click Next to proceed

  5. A verification mail message will be sent to your LEVEE mail account. You should click on the link in that message to confirm the message.

  6. Now your LEVEE e-mail should show up in your Live.com account and you can also send mail as your @levee.wustl.edu or @wustl.edu address.

(add .wustl.edu to the e-mail address if e-mailing from off campus!)
