Title:
“Evidence for Young Acidic Water Beneath Mars from Meteorite Studies”
Abstract:
Data obtained from Mars orbital missions over the last years suggest that multiple locations on the planet’s surface bear evidence for sulfate mineralization deposited billions of years ago. This global view is supplemented by more comprehensive outcrop-scale observations made by NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers of K, Fe-sulfate deposits (jarosite) that form under low pH conditions.
An exciting connection with these spacecraft-based findings was made when jarosite was discovered in the meteorite collection roughly 2 years ago. Implications for this laboratory-based microscale finding will be discussed.
