Harold L. Levin
Professor Emeritus
Ph.D., Washington University, 1956
Paleontology
Professor Levin's research has been in the general area of invertebrate
paleontology, and in particular the study of calcareous nannoplankton
(Coccolithophorids ). In addition to investigation of these tiny
protoctistans, he has used foraminifers as a basis for biostratigraphic
studies related to petroleum exploration. For nearly two decades, Professor
Levin combined his work in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences,
with service to the university as an associate dean in the College of
Arts and Sciences. Undergraduate education in the Earth sciences and geowriting
continue to occupy much of Professor Levin's time. He shares with all
other members of the department the conviction that knowledge of the Earth
should be an essential element of a modern liberal arts education. As
a reflection of this conviction, he continues to write and illustrate
textbooks and laboratory studies in physical geology, historical geology,
and paleontology. His popular Earth Through Time is now in its
8th edition. Professor Levin has received two awards for excellence in
teaching from the Council of Students of Arts and Sciences and the award
for teaching excellence from the Washington University Alumni Association.
