| Great ideas and controversies
in the geological sciences and how ideas change and become accepted
in science. The format is part lecture, part discussion. Writing
and oral presentation will be emphasized. Students will read primary
sources, as well as book, journal, and Web-based historical accounts
and interpretations. Among the topics to be addressed are: Continental
Drift and Plate Tectonics, Development of the Geological Time Scale,
Age of the Earth, Mass Extinctions, and the Snowball Earth Hypothesis.
