Herbert A. Wheeler Fellowship

Wheeler Fellowships are awarded by the Department annually to graduate students in good academic standing for whom other forms of financial support are not available. They are funded by an endowment left by Herbert A. Wheeler for students in chemistry, geology, or mining engineering. For many years, Wheeler Fellowships have been the main, or sole, source of summer research support for ten to fifteen graduate students annually. From time to time, Wheeler Fellowships have also been issued during the academic year, usually for a short period of time for students finishing thesis work, or for international students who have not yet developed the English competency required to fulfill the duties Teaching Assistants. The amount and duration of the award are determined by the Department, depending upon the individual student's circumstances.
